Philadelphia Newborn Photographer Tori Stauffer talks about the importance of image competition.
When I started as a newborn photographer, I was super focused on learning everything there was to know about newborn photography from other newborn photographers. It took me a few years to step back and look at the bigger picture. It isn't just about a pretty newborn picture, or the perfect pose. It's about so much more than that, the lighting, the composition, the story. But newborn photography workshops don't really teach all that.
So I went back to basics and entered a print competition. I started to look at every image through the eyes of the perfect portrait. See, it doesn't matter if your subject is a newborn, a horse, or a mountain. In the end, the only thing that matters is what someone feels when they look at it. So I stopped focusing everything on just Newborn Photography, and started looking at the 12 components that make up the perfect image.
Print Competition grew my skill faster than anything I had done previously. However, it also caused me to now look at every image I create with those 12 elements in mind. It has turned this Newborn Photographer into a portrait artist who creates stunning artwork.
